“We are Hope!” is the tagline for the Relay for Life of Greene County, slated for Friday, April 24, at the Greene County Community Center.
“Providing hope in the fight against cancer has been the purpose of Relay for Life since the first one in 1985. We wanted to get back to that one big reason we hold the Relay,” said event leadership team chair Tori Riley.
The Relay for Life will have a new look this year, moving to Friday evening rather than a Saturday event. The Relay will start at 5 pm and finish at 9 pm. Like past Relays, there will be a survivor walk and reception, a community barbecue, team camps and walkers, entertainment, and the luminaria ceremony at the end.
“We know people are busy and maybe can’t spend much of a springtime Saturday at the Relay. By making it a shorter event after the work day on Friday, we hope families will plan to come enjoy the supper and stay as long as they can,” Riley said.
Autumn Larson is team chair again this year. She has contacted last year’s teams and is welcoming new teams.
Teams can continue raising funds through the end of the year, so fundraising totals for 2019 have only recently become available. In 2019, 15 teams raised $14,042. Team Landon Martin raised the most at $2,954. Home State Bank was close behind at $2,820, followed by Holy Walkamolies at $1,500, the BPO Does at $1,170, and Velda’s Varieties at $983.
The Greene County Relay for Life met its 2019 goal of raising $40,000 for the American Cancer Society, with other funds coming from the silent auction, luminaria sales, T-shirt sales, the community barbecue, and donations.
